Number of Schools

Data on the number of schools in New Zealand as at 1 July, by School Type.

At 1 July 2019, the number of state, state-integrated and private schools in New Zealand was 2,534.  This is three more schools than in July 2018.

The period between 1 July 2018 and 1 July 2019 saw a total of nineteen schools close. Eleven were the remaining partnership schools, all of which transitioned to become state and state integrated schools. Of the remaining seven schools five were state primary schools, one a private composite school, one a state integrated secondary Y9-15 school and one a private secondary Y9-Y15 school.

Between 1 July 2018 and 1 July 2019 a total of twenty two schools opened, eleven of which are accounted for by the transition of the former partnership schools.  In total there were seven new full primary schools, two contributing primary, four composite (two private), four secondary Y7-Y15 (one private) and five secondary Y9-Y15 (one private) schools.

Between 1 July 2018 and 1 July 2019 six schools changed type: five full primary schools became contributing schools and one composite school became a full primary school.
