Vocational Education & Training

These tables present counts relating to Vocational Education Training (VET) programmes in the New Zealand tertiary education sector, under the definition of VET adopted for the Reform of Vocational Education (ROVE).

Provider-based VET is defined as follows:

  • tertiary education provision occurring at institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs), wānanga, and private training establishments (PTEs).
  • enrolments in formal qualifications of greater than 0.03 EFTS (more than one week's full-time duration).
  • enrolments by domestic student only. International student enrolments are not included in these tables..
  • non-degree provision in certificate and diploma qualifications at Levels 3 to 7 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF).
  • excludes enrolments in qualifications assigned the following New Zealand Classification of Education (NZSCED) study fields: 091502 (te Reo), 090314 (Tikanga) and 070115 (ESOL).
  • qualifications funded mainly under the Student Component (SAC),  Maori and Pasifika Trades Training and SAC Level 3 and 4 Competitive Process funding categories.

Workplace-based VET is defined as follows:

  • workplace-based training arranged by industry training organisations (ITOs), including traineeships and apprenticeships.
  • provision in certificate and diploma qualifications at Levels 1 to 7 on the NZQF.
  • excludes Limited Credit Programmes (LCPs).
  • excludes enrolments in qualifications assigned the following NZSCED study fields:  091502 (te Reo), 090314 (Tikanga) and 070115 (ESOL).
