Links to key strategies and policy documents related to Māori education.

A range of policy relating to Māori Education, including Māori medium education, have been developed.  These are located on other Ministry of Education websites, but, can be accessed by the links below.

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa is the national curriculum for Māori-medium education. Kura and Māori medium settings can develop and implement their marautanga-ā-kura (localised curriculum).

Mātaiako

Mātaiako describes the process of gathering and interpreting information about student progress and achievement and using that information to improve teaching and learning.

Ka Hikitia

Ka Hikitia - Accelerating Success 2013-17 is the ministry strategy designed to change how the education system performs so that all Māori students gain the skills, qualifications and knowledge they need to enjoy and achieve education success as Māori.

Ka Hikitia has been extended until the end of 2018 while the Ministry works with the sector and communities on the next phase of the strategy.

Tau Mai Te Reo

Tau Mai Te Reo - The Māori Language in Education Strategy 2013-2017 expresses what the Ministry of Education and education sector agencies will do for learners of Māori language in education; this includes Māori-medium education and Māori language in English medium.

Tau Mai Te Reo has been extended until the end of 2018 while the Ministry works with the sector and communities on the next phase of the strategy.

Te Rāngai Kāhui Ako ā-iwi

Te Rāngai Kāhui Ako ā-iwi is a framework to support sustainable Māori medium education, recognising the diversity region by region, iwi by iwi.  It has two key components:

  • The framework which is based on analysis of areas where Māori medium education is thriving; and
  • Regional system data and analysis that provides information about Māori-medium education by region
